Dimitris Korres is one of the most important climbers in Greece, in the 70s and 80s, and one of the most influential people in the field of Greek mountaineering.
With imagination and excellent technique, he was the first to methodically train on the rocks, to improve and to climb free routes in Greece, which until then had only been done artificially. At the same time, he opened numerous new routes and was one of the first to use natural safety in Greece, moving with speed and beauty and wrote books and guides on mountaineering and climbing that are still considered relevant.
In Flambouri, Varasova, Penteli and elsewhere, Korres opened and repeated routes that became classics. Special mention should be made to “Ancient Spirit”, in the Daveli cave, which is also the first high-difficulty route done by Greek climbers (VIII).
In addition to his climbing skills, Korres is an architectural engineer and as such has participated in many original large projects (ports, bridges and others) in Greece and abroad, while he collaborated with Dimitris Papaioannou in the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games, solving various difficult technical issues.
Special mention must be made of the imaginative transportation of buildings that he has carried out, as well as the awesome prototype car that he designed from scratch and built. A high-performance vehicle, suitable for use on and off the road (Korres 4).
Honoring his action and contribution to the field of Greek mountaineering and climbing, the Greek Mountaineering and Climbing Association (SEOB) declared him an honorary mountain guide in 2023.
